Sierra’s Dance Costume

When we signed up Sierra for a dance class during daycare hours, we didn’t realize the recital would be such a big deal. While I am still not convinced on all the stuff that goes along with this recital, including getting dressed up in full costume to take photography pictures on a Saturday morning a month before the recital, Sierra looked pretty darn cute in her Little Mermaid costume. And I don’t know where she learned it, but she sure knows how to pose!

Kaiya’s third birthday party

We had a great time celebrating Kaiya’s birthday at Little Gym! She chose a Nemo/fish theme for the cake and decorations, the balance beam and bars were the favorite activities.

In honor of her birthday today, Kaiya wanted to wear the cupcake shirt that she wore to Sierra’s party. True to form, she proceeded to pair it with different colored leggings and her rain boots. This is a typical outfit for her, we’re just happy that she gets herself dressed. Sierra also tends to pick whichever leggings she first finds in her drawer, ignoring offers to help her find a pair that matches. So these pictures represent pretty normal mis-matched outfits!

Kaiya was excited to share cupcakes with her friends at school, and to then come home to find presents and balloons waiting for her. She had some trouble blowing out her candles, but eventually figured it out. She and Sierra then ran off to play with her new dollhouse dolls….note where they placed the Daddy!

Butterfly Release

Lucy had given Sierra a “butterfly garden” for her birthday, a fantastic gift that let her watch tiny live caterpillars grow bigger, turn into chrysalises, and then emerge as Painted Lady butterflies. As they were coming out of their chrysalises, Sierra named them “Sierra, Kaiya, Lucy, Sara, and Lily”. They each emerged over a period of several days, it was pretty funny hearing her say that “Sierra, Kaiya, and Lucy all came out of their chrysalis but Sara and Lily are lazy and are still in their chrysalises”.

After enjoying our butterflies for about a week, we agreed to set them free last Sunday afternoon. Kaiya quickly lost interest in both the butterflies and being photographed (see pouty face) and opted to ride her “new” bike instead (hand me down from Sierra, as Sierra moved up to the next size) but Sierra stayed quite focused until they’d all flown away. One butterfly took a long rest on the lawn before it flew away, which thrilled her. The rest of the afternoon included a quick visit from Grandpa Jonathan and Grandma Carol and time to play in the backyard.

Hidden Villa

Today we met Allie & Lucy, and Kristin, Farhang, Sara (dress) & Lily (blue shirt) at a local farm called Hidden Villa. The highlights of the visit were the baby pigs and the chickens that are tame enough to pet. Lily was the only child who managed to get close enough to touch a chicken on her own, until Chicken-Whisperer John caught one. We ended our visit with a lovely picnic lunch near a stream.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012

We had so much fun doing an Easter Egg Hunt at the San Jose Rose Garden last year with the Kassaei Family that we decided to make it an annual tradition. It was the perfect day to do an egg hunt, eat a picnic lunch, do an easter craft project, and climb trees. And to be a little silly!

Easter Eggs 2012

We started dyeing Easter Eggs together with Lucy when Sierra was barely two years old. We were happy to continue this annual tradition yesterday – along with Kaiya and Gavin of course!

As this was our fourth year of dyeing eggs together, I cannot resist re-posting a few pics from the last three years. How they have grown!

Sierra’s 5th Birthday Party

We celebrated Sierra’s birthday today with her friends at Pump It Up. Great fun was had by all!

Sierra will have a party this Saturday, but we made sure to celebrate her actual birthday today as well. She chose a fancy dress and specified that she wanted a “birthday braid”, which apparently means a braid that is pinned up on the side of her head. She wore a “birthday girl” pin to school and brought in some cookies to share with her friends. She was very excited to then come home to balloons, presents, and a small cake. She also had fun video-chatting with Aunt Neva on Daddy’s phone. At bedtime she proclaimed it “the best birthday ever!”
